Making a Course Site Available to Students


By default, courses on Blackboard, are Unavailable to students. Instructors make courses Available when the course is ready for students.  There are several ways to change the availability of a course.


Option 1 - From the Course List

  1. From the Institutional page, click on the Courses link in the list on the left side of the page.
  2. From the course list, you can see which courses are unavailable to students as they are labeled private.ellipses
  3. To make a private course available, click on the ellipses (...) located to the far right of the course name.
  4. Click the Open course link.open course link
  5. Click the Open to Students button.


Note: When courses are Open, the Private notation is no longer present next to the course name.


Option 2 – From Inside of a Course Site


  1. Click on a link to a content area on the course menu to make lock icon visible. The lock icon is not visible on the announcement page.
  2. Click the lock icon located next to Edit Mode in the far upper right-hand corner.availability lock icon
  3. A red closed lock means the course is not available to students.
  4. A gray open lock means the site is available to students.

Option 3 – From the Control Panel of a Course


  1. Go to the Course Management>Control Panel area of the Course Menu Panel.
  2. Click on Customization.
  3. Click the Properties link.
  4. Scroll down to Set Availability and click the radio button next to Yes.
  5. Click the Submit button located at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
